The Bracelet That Broke the Silence

Asia D, a senior at The Essex County Chapter, reflects on how a bracelet making activity made a huge impact on her and the seniors she met during a GlamourGals visit.

On one memorable visit to the senior home last year, I met Mrs. Agatha. The first time I greeted Mrs. A, she did not respond. I offered to make her a bracelet, but she remained silent. I was determined to try again on the next visit. When we returned, I greeted Mrs. A and although she remained quiet, I went ahead and made her a bracelet, and I left it next to her. 

On the next visit, surprisingly, Mrs. A was wearing the bracelet I made her. I was elated. I mentioned that I attend church regularly, Mrs. A looked up, then she spoke to me for the first time. She shared that she too went to church and she talked about her beloved late husband as I admired her wedding ring. We found common ground and what began as silence, became a meaningful connection. My experience with Mrs. A taught me the power of human kindness and reminded me that we all have a unique story and deserve to feel seen.
