Why I Know How to Paint Nails
Benjamin M, President of The Frisch School Chapter and winner of the GG Leader Award, reflects on how GlamourGals taught him how to paint nails, signifying a greater impact on his life.
Knowing how to paint nails is not a skill many boys have. But it is something I can proudly do. And no, it’s not because I have a sister; rather I know how to do a manicure because of Glamour Gals and the impact it has had on my life.
My first makeover still remains my favorite. It’s when I first met Betty, a boisterous redheaded retired teacher who told me about raising a family in Brooklyn while I painted her nails. We bonded over our shared hair color and family stories. She shared that she rarely sees her grandchildren and deeply appreciated the chance to talk with a teenager. That's when I realized it wasn't really about the makeover; it was about the energy and care we brought by just being present.
As President of my school’s chapter, I have grown our chapter to over 100 volunteers fostering a community of care and kindness to help bridge the intergenerational gap. Whether it is organizing our holiday card campaign or coordinating our monthly makeover visits, my goal is to always cultivate genuine connections that go beyond the makeover and make meaningful impacts.
