The Power of Being Seen

Deanna K, Vice President of Bayside High School, reflects on how GlamourGals allows her to make others feel seen during senior visits.

I didn’t truly understand the difference I was making until my third visit to a senior home, when a resident named Soo-Yeon quietly said, “I’m not beautiful.”That day, I gave her a manicure, painted her a butterfly sun catcher, made her a bracelet, and reminded her of her beauty. When she asked me to write my name on the sun catcher so she’d remember me, I realized my presence reminded her she was seen, valued, and cared for. That moment was one of many that defined why I love GlamourGals.

My journey began at the end of freshman year after seeing a GlamourGals chapter on Instagram. By sophomore year, I connected with another student who shared the same vision, and together we launched our own chapter. What started as an idea grew into a thriving community of over 60 volunteers, regular meetings, creative bonding activities, and meaningful senior home visits.GlamourGals has shown me that creating space for someone to be seen can transform lives including my own.
