More than a Makeover

Denilia S, Vice President of Townsend Harris High School’s chapter, reflects on a moment that showed her that GlamourGals is more than a makeover, but an opportunity for connection.

When I first joined GlamourGals as a freshman, I was simply a volunteer. From freshman year to junior year, I showed up consistently, learning the importance of patience, compassion, and connection through each visit. Those early experiences are what built my foundation. By the time I stepped into the role of Vice President, I wasn’t just leading, I was leading with understanding. In my leadership role, I worked to create a welcoming environment, and made it a priority to mentor new volunteers to focus on building real relationships.

One moment that truly transformed my perspective was during a visit with a woman who was going through a very difficult time. At first, she was quiet and distant, but I stayed patient and present. Slowly, she began to open up, sharing how lonely and overwhelmed she had been feeling. As we talked, I gently suggested trying a clear polish, something small and low-pressure. She agreed. As I carefully did her nails, I saw her begin to relax, her smile slowly returning. By the end of our visit, she was proudly showing her nails to others and even laughing. Moments like this reminded me that GlamourGals is about so much more than beauty; it's about connection, empathy, and presence.
