The Power of Presence
Akifa H, a senior at Bayside High School and winner of the GG Outstanding Leader Award, reflects on how a GlamourGals senior visit showed her the importance of being present in the moment.
During my time as a member of GlamourGals, I had the privilege of meeting a senior named Alena. Despite the challenges she faced in her life, she never once complained about her situation. Instead, she spoke about her life with appreciation and gratitude. Because of leg issues and people doubting her abilities, Alena was never able to fully pursue her dream of dancing. Despite this, she encouraged me to chase my own dreams and not let fear or doubt stop me, even if it meant doing things alone.
After finishing her nails, we played a game where we closed our eyes and picked colored beads to make a bracelet, and to see if we would match colors. When we did, we laughed together, and it became a small moment of joy we shared. Spending time with Alena helped me understand how meaningful it is for seniors to have someone who truly listens to them. It also strengthened my desire to pursue nursing, where I can combine care, compassion, and active support for others’ well-being.
