From Nervous Beginnings to Lasting Connections

Isabel A, President of St. Jean Baptiste High School’s chapter, reflects on how through GlamourGals events she was able to build lasting connections.

During my first GlamourGals event, I was incredibly nervous. I had never painted anyone’s nails before, and I didn’t want to mess it up. My nervousness faded as the room filled with laughter and conversation. From that day, I knew that GlamourGals was a place where I could continue to spread kindness and joy to those who need it most. I went from fearing I’d mess up a manicure to leading an entire chapter!

I saw the powerful effect of my actions when Charlotte, an older adult whom I had done a manicure for a few weeks prior, came up to our group of volunteers and asked for me. It was especially meaningful that she remembered me, given the difficulties she sometimes has with her memory. We talked about her college experience, and I shared a bit about my own plans for the future. My experience with Charlotte reinforced that kindness and conversations truly make an impact, which motivates me to continue serving others wherever I go.
